A new casting call for The Nun 2 possibly reveal story details for the horror sequel, including the return of a key character from the first film. The 2018 film served as both a spinoff and prequel to The Conjuring 2 exploring the origins of the demon Valak as it took the form of a terrifying nun that would eventually torment Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Nun revolved around a Roman Catholic priest and nun in her novitiate who investigate reports of a nun suicide in a secluded Romanian monastery in 1952 and learn of the dark truth of the location.
Taissa Farmiga led the cast of The Nun alongside Demián Bichir, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons as Valak, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, Sandra Teles, Manuela Ciucur, Ani Sava, Maria Obretin and Gabrielle Downey. Directed by The Hallow's Corin Hardy on a script from Annabelle scribe Gary Dauberman, the film hit theaters to generally negative reviews from critics for its lackluster story, overreliance on jump scares and inconsistent logic, though the performances and atmosphere did receive some positive reception. Despite the poor reviews, The Nun would prove to be a box office smash, grossing over $365 million against its $22 million budget, becoming the highest-grossing of The Conjuring movies and earning a sequel entering development a year after its release.
On the heels of confirmation that the sequel is moving forward, a new casting call from Cast It Talent has possibly revealed the first The Nun 2 story details. The synopsis included in the casting call states the film is set in 1956 France and will center on Taissa Farmiga's Sister Irene as she is forced to face Valak once again when a priest is murdered, resulting in an evil spreading. Screen Rant reached out to New Line Cinema for comment, though received no response at the initial time of writing, though have since confirmed the details to be authentic.
The Nun 2 story details do offer some interesting insight into the nature of the Conjuring spinoff's sequel, but may also raise some questions in regards to the franchise's timeline. The Nun notably ended with Jonas Bloquet's Frenchie having become possessed by Valak moments after it was seemingly defeated and banished back to Hell by Irene with the blood of Christ, with an inverted crucifix appearing on the back of his neck as he, Irene and Father Burke rode away from the monastery. This in turn led to the reveal he was the possessed person shown in the flashback footage for The Conjuring in which Lorraine saw Ed's death, setting of the events of both it and its 2016 sequel.
Given the end of the first film seemingly tied the story all together, The Nun 2's story details teasing that Taissa Farmiga's Irene is returning to face Valak once again may leave some wondering how franchise head James Wan will continue to bridge the two narratives. Seeing as Irene is never mentioned in the other Conjuring films and Annabelle: Creation, in which Valak was teased in a photo from the Romanian monastery, was set in 1957, it does seem possible the sequel could explain Farmiga's absence as having sacrificed herself in the fight against evil as Valak transferred its possession to another figure before returning to Frenchie. While audiences await more details, they can revisit the first The Nun streaming on HBO Max now.
