The 10 Worst Starters In The NFL Today, Ranked

The 2022 NFL season is slated to come to a close soon, as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles will square off in the Super Bowl. The two teams showed their worth as the best of the league, with starting quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts as the two top candidates for this year's MVP award.

While those two of the current faces of the league, there's been a lot of bad in the NFL this season. Not to shame them, but there were starters this year that really, really didn't deserve as much playing time as they got in 2022.

10 Skyy Moore

It's a bit unfortunate that Skyy Moore landed in this spot because when on offense, he is electric. However, the Kansas City Chiefs rookie is not a starter on offense and is instead getting all of his snaps as the starting kick returner.

Moore is not a good fit as a returner, and it's mind-boggling that he is still used back there. This season he fumbled three times on returns and wasn't that electric when he didn't. To his credit, Moore lost his job halfway through the season but eventually returned as a starter and had an incredible game against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

9 Robert Tonyan

Robert Tonyan isn't a bad player per se, but he doesn't need to be a starter. The Green Bay Packers had their worst season in years in 2022, and a lot of that had to deal with a lack of offensive firepower. Tonyan is the clearest example of that.

Tonyan was an okay blocker this season, but nothing crazy. Despite having Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball, the starting tight end mustered up just 44 catches for 362 yards with an average of 8.2 yards per catch. When you're basically invisible as a pass-catching option beyond ten yards, that's an issue.

8 Joe Flacco

Realistically, this spot could be occupied by either Mike White or Zach Wilson. However, since it's former Super Bowl champion and "Elite Dragon" Joe Flacco that ended the year as the starting quarterback, he gets the nod here.

To his credit, Flacco did lead one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history this season, as he led the Jets to a 31-30 win over the Cleveland Browns despite trailing 30-17 with 1:22 remaining. That moment was an all-time great for the former Raven but he was terrible outside that one game.

7 Davis Mills

Davis Mills was seen as a potential breakout player entering this season. In his rookie season in Houston, he had a solid season that surprised fans, and many were hopeful that he could do even better in his first full season as a starter.

Instead, Mills completely melted down. While the Houston Texans were a terrible team around him, the quarterback was their biggest issue. Mills had more total turnovers than touchdowns and was even benched for Kyle Allen at one point.

6 Robby Anderson

Robby Anderson's career has plummeted faster than anyone expected. He first landed in Carolina in 2020 with high hopes and even debuted with a great 1,000-yard season. Within two seasons, Anderson was demanding out of the team and was fighting his teammates.

Anderson wasn't great in Carolina this season, and was eventually traded to the Arizona Cardinals who were in dire need of a wideout. Despite the team sending two draft picks, he caught just seven passes for them in 2022.

5 Chase Claypool

Robby Anderson's downfall was surprising because of the speed, but not that shocking due to his terrible reputation prior to this season. Meanwhile, Chase Claypool's terrible 2022 season pretty much came out of nowhere. Prior to this year, he seemed to be an emerging star for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chicago Bears (rightfully) felt Justin Fields needed a number one, and traded a second-round pick for Claypool. Despite giving up that high pick, Claypool put up just 14 catches for 140 yards. Yikes.

4 Skylar Thompson

It feels unfair to put Skylar Thompson on this list given that he was never supposed to be the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback. However, due to injuries to both Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater, the seventh-round pick saw action in eight games this year.

Thompson threw for 534 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, as well as fumbling twice in his limited time. To be fair to the former K-State quarterback, he did show a lot of heart, and nearly pulled the upset against the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

3 Matt Ryan

The Indianapolis Colts didn't really have a starting quarterback this season, as they cycled through three different passers. However, Matt Ryan got the majority of the playing time, as he started 12 games for the team this season after being traded from the Atlanta Falcons.

Despite high hopes, Ryan badly showed his age this season. While he threw for more touchdowns than interceptions, he also fumbled an incredible 15 times in 2022. Furthermore, Ryan was also the starting quarterback for the team as they gave up the biggest comeback in NFL history to the Minnesota Vikings.

2 Leonard Fournette

Leonard Fournette is one of the bigger reasons why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a disappointing season this year. While the running back was one of the major keys to the team's recent success, he completely disappeared in 2022.

Fournette rushed for 462 yards on a terrible 3.4 yards a carry. Furthermore, his longest run all season long was 17 yards, showing that he had zero acceleration and was unable to break off meaningful gains.

1 Jonah Williams

If one is looking for the reason why Joe Burrow continues to get battered season after season, Jonah Williams is one of the major reasons why. The former first-round pick entered this year hoping to make a statement but was instead the worst lineman in the league.

Williams allowed the most sacks in the league in 2022, giving up 13. Furthermore, he also allowed six quarterback hits and 26 hurries. As the only returning starter from the Bengals' offensive line in the Super Bowl, the Bengals will likely look to continue revamping their o-line for 2023.
