AJ Styles Is The Perfect Candidate For Roman Reigns After WrestleMania

WrestleMania 38 is now in the rearview mirror, but it'll be a while before we are done digesting it. The two-night show was pretty great, almost from top to bottom. Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch put on a clinic, Cody Rhodes got a hell of a pop, and Vince McMahon took a god-awful stunner (at the age of 76) from Stone Cold Steve Austin in Dallas, Texas. If that didn't put a smile on your face then odds are nothing did over WrestleMania weekend.

The most stupendous WrestleMania of all time ended with what WWE claimed to be the biggest match of all time. What might have been one final showdown between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar to unify the Universal and WWE Championships. On paper, all the ingredients should have made it one of the biggest matches ever. In reality, it couldn't live up to most of the stuff we had already seen over the weekend. The match didn't really deliver, but really what matters is who stood tall come the end of it.

Roman Reigns' Reign Continues

That man was Reigns, of course. The Tribal Chief has been Universal Champion for 583 days at the time of writing this. Now Lesnar has failed to dethrone him yet again, and handed him the WWE Title in the process, who exactly will eventually end Roman's dominant reign has never been less clear. Now, despite seemingly beating everyone, there are candidates. Seth Rollins, a rematch with Edge, hell, maybe Cody Rhodes immediately steps up to the highest level. There's also still a chance this all leads to The Rock beating some sense into his cousin at WrestleMania Hollywood.

Honestly, I'm fine with any and all of that. What's a little troubling is WWE doesn't appear to know what to do next, or at least hasn't decided. Lesnar apparently hopped on a plane back to Canada as soon as he was done on Sunday, and there's a very real chance we never see him again. Reigns, on the other hand, well, he has both of WWE's top titles. It might be tradition for WWE's biggest stars to take some time off after WrestleMania, but right now, The Big Dog is going nowhere.

What makes me think WWE isn't sure what to do next stems from Reigns' somewhat empty promo to close Raw. The Raw After WrestleMania, which really should be the biggest Raw of the year, closed with the new Unified Champion saying hey, tune into SmackDown on Friday if you want to know what I'm going to do next. I'm all for WWE ending shows on cliffhangers to make sure fans tune in to see what's next, but doing it this way is a little lazy, and also a tad worrying.

Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles

If Reigns isn't losing his titles anytime soon, then for me, there is a clear and obvious Superstar who should be his next opponent. Someone he hasn't faced off against since his Tribal Cheif run. AJ Styles. Reigns needs someone he can have some great matches with to get fans who are bored by his run to get back on side, and The Phenomenal One is that man. These two have clashed before, prior to Reigns had found his best self, and they were some of the best matches the champ has had so far, regardless of which Reigns we are talking about.

Now, there is one element of this campaign that continues to leave me conflicted. I don't necessarily think Styles should be the one to end Reigns' run, especially if The Rock really is waiting at the end of the tunnel. The goal here is for Styles to have some top-class matches with The Big Dog. Fill a PPV main event or two. Again, remind us how good Reigns can be in the ring when he has the right opponent. Rock or not, make Reigns seem even more unbeatable by scraping wins against someone who is widely regarded to be the best wrestler on the planet right now. It'll make his eventual defeat mean even more than it will already.

So far there has only been one WWE show following WrestleMania 38. Although no one stepped up to Reigns, it sadly seems unlikely Styles will be the one to do so. The Phenomenal One appears adamant to get revenge on Edge, even though the two have already been to war on The Grandest Stage Of Them All. The circumstances of that loss are exactly why Styles should cut his losses and set his sights on Reigns. Damian Priest distracted him, so he hasn't been weakened by the loss in any way. However, Edge's stable will continue to grow. The numbers game is only going to get worse for Styles. Cut your losses AJ, jump to SmackDown and elevate Reigns beyond belief between now and SummerSlam.
