AEW's "Four Pillars" Promo On Dynamite Shows That AEW's Future Isn't Ready For The Spotlight

The AEW World Championship picture has seen some fresh faces emerge in recent weeks, as the reigning champion MJF is fighting on multiple fronts as Darby Allin, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, and Sammy Guevara have all been gunning for his gold. All four of these men have been slated as the “four pillars” of AEW, providing the groundwork for the company as young and talented individuals, propping up each division to ensure the promotion thrives. Despite a lot of talent involved, a recent promo on an episode of AEW Dynamite has perhaps indicated that these men aren’t quite ready for the spotlight.
Darby Allin, Jack Perry, and Sammy Guevara Shared A Promo Of Insults On AEW Dynamite
AEW opened up with Jack Perry, Sammy Guevara, and Darby Allin all coming to the ring after weeks of picking up victory after victory to earn themselves a spot at the top of the rankings. They have each staked their claim for a bout against MJF, and all signs point towards perhaps a fatal four way match for the gold at the upcoming Double or Nothing PPV event. Much like they had done in previous weeks towards MJF, the three traded jibes at one another.

Allin opened up with a confusing promo about liking Sammy Guevara, but saying he is a sidekick. It should be noted that the pair have beaten the hell out of each other in the past, so liking each other seemed out of the question. He then took his attention to Perry, stating that he had it easy getting to AEW. Perry returned with insults of his own, saying that despite kids dressing up as Allin, they don’t know the real version of him, which is antisocial, rude, and unfriendly backstage, and he made fun of a failed skateboarding career.
Guevara took a turn to make remarks at the pair, stating that he had to watch Perry share the ring with Bret Hart at the first Double or Nothing event whilst he was on the pre-show. This was an odd statement considering Perry was one of three random babyfaces to beat up MJF in that segment, in a moment which didn’t exactly give Perry any spotlight. MJF emerged after all this had been said between the other pillars, and his arrival couldn’t have come sooner.
The “Four Pillars” Promo Felt Messy
When it comes to the three-way promo between Perry, Guevara, and Allin, it wasn’t very strong. Each man seemed to struggle getting their words out and getting to the point, and even though points were disjointed it still felt like they were taking turns reading from a script. It wasn’t natural, it didn’t flow, and no one looked better off after it. All three men are still young and due to the crowded nature of AEW’s roster, they haven’t had loads of opportunities to perform on the mic.

Whilst giving them live experience will no doubt help to build each competitor, this sort of thing shouldn’t be done in a title feud for the top prize in the whole company. One thing that was annoying about this segment were the interactions between Perry and Allin. Both are supposed to be babyfaces yet they seemed to try and make the other appear unlikable, which isn’t clever when trying to build up good guys for the future.
MJF Is The Only Pillar Currently Worthy Of Main Event Spotlight In AEW
When it comes to MJF’s arrival for the segment, he brought stability to it instantly. It must be said that over the last few weeks, the pillars have in fact impressed in promos, but these came during back and forths with MJF. This has proven that it is the champion that has kept things going and flowing well, whereas when faced with one another, the pillars’ promos just lacked anything special. Sharing the spotlight with MJF did help to elevate them, but after this recent promo it feels like their stocks have dropped a little, which isn’t a good thing ahead of potential world title matches.

Although the storyline seems to imply that only one man will challenge MJF for the gold at Double or Nothing, the fact that MJF and Guevara are conspiring likely means that it will end up as a four way anyway. This is probably for the best instead of having just one of the other three carrying themselves in a world title program by themselves. From an in-ring perspective, the three are stellar performers, but as an overall package, they aren’t quite there yet. MJF is the only pillar who has managed to put it all together and come out looking like an absolute star who deserves to be standing in the spotlight.
